Episode 7 - By Dawn's Early Light
It’s summertime and with it come all kinds of outdoor festivals & concerts. Sometimes, when things go wrong, they go wrong very quickly. As is the case with the 7th episode of The Night Shift’s 3rd season when Drew, Syd & Riley attend the San Antonio Park Festival and an accident with the fireworks truck setting up for the display later that night occurs sending people into a frenzied panic. Drew & Syd frantically search for Riley and once she is found safe, they begin tending to the injured. TC & Topher arrive on the scene to help when one of the drivers of the fireworks trucks informs them that the 2nd truck could go off at any minute. Topher is already on his way to attempt to rescue the other & crew members when the truck explodes sending Topher flying with the force of the explosion. He has his bell rung for a few moments, but when TC reaches him he is able to get back up and continue tending to those who need it. When patients from the fireworks accident flood the ER, the doctors have their hands full as they rush to treat them. A single mom & daughter are among the victims who are being treated. Syd forms a bond with the mom and Riley strikes a friendship with the daughter. Later, Topher begins to develop symptoms as a result from the blast. He is adamant that he is fine, just over tired. TC & Jordan know better and force Topher to undergo tests to determine if he has any unseen injuries. The results show that he has a bad concussion and needs to be placed on desk duty for a while.
Tensions & teasing between Shannon and Paul have reached new heights as she relentlessly picks on and calls him out on his serious attitude towards her. Paul tries to counter her comments by pointing out what he feels are flaws in her professionalism.
A homeless man arrives in the ER complaining of pain. Kenny isn’t quite buying it assuming that he’s just looking to score drugs, Shannon notices a specific tattoo on the man’s hand and insists that he be checked out at least. While she examines him, she talks about the tattoo and finds that he is a talented street artist whose work she has admired. He doesn’t want anyone to know who he is. Shannon discovers the man has a very swollen knee and is determined to treat him much to the chagrin of Kenny. While being treated, the man continues working on his painting. Shannon reveals that she was an aspiring artist before realizing that her village had a greater need for doctors than artists.
The homeless man’s condition starts to decline as further symptoms develop. He is found to have poisoning from using his oil based paints in his art. Paul & Shannon treat him successfully.
Shannon gives Paul a drawing that she did for Paul. He is oblivious to the fact that she drew it for him until the heavily medicated patient points out that even he could tell that Shannon did the drawing because she likes him.
Scott & Jordan are at odds over the comments that Jordan made about the relationship between him & Annie. Scott confronts Jordan once more attempting to get her to accept the fact that he cares about Annie and wants to be there for her.
When Drew tries to step in and help the relationship between Riley’s father & Syd, she gets angry and confronts Drew. Syd reveals that they are moving to be closer to Riley’s father because of a custody battle for Riley. Drew must say good-bye to Syd & Riley at least for the time being.
Having reached the mid-season point of the series, viewers still have a lot to look forward to as The Night Shift continues!
