Episode 6 - Hot In The City

When a heatwave hits San Antonio, the temperature isn't the only thing that's steamy as Jordan & Sam, Scott & Annie, Kenny & Jocelyn and TC & Jessica heat things up in their lives outside the walls of the hospital. However, once the work shift starts, personal lives are set aside as the doctors tend to their patients. First, a woman is brought in with symptoms of heat stroke she experienced while running in a marathon. It is later discovered that she has a form of meningitis & while they await test results, her condition worsens as she develops new symptoms & suffers a heart attack. When the test results come in, it is found that she has a rare, but treatable disease.

Jordan & Shannon have the night off and attend a wrestling event. At a tense moment during the match, the audience grows restless & fights begin to break out. Jordan & Shannon attempt to leave, but when they witness two serious injuries nearby, they call 911 and begin treatment. A woman is taken to the hospital with serious spinal injuries & a man with internal injuries.

In the middle of the heatwave, the air conditioning system for the entire hospital stops working adding to the discomfort.

Drew & Topher are called upon to treat the girl with the spine injury. Suddenly, she loses feeling her legs. When the orthopedic surgeon is a no show, Drew & Scott must perform the procedure. When the surgery reveals unexpected challenges, Drew suggests going in through her mouth to complete the procedure. It is a very delicate & tricky maneuver, but Drew had seen it done while treating patients overseas. In recovery, Drew & Scott test the spinal patient's reflexes and find that the surgery was a success.

After seeing how Drew stepped up and handled the spinal patient’s case, Topher has a conversation about the time that Drew spent overseas to gain insight on how he is coping since returning home.

Meanwhile, the male patient from the wrestling match, Victor, flirts with Jordan while she treats his condition. When he worsens, Jordan orders that he be tested for TB. Results are negative and Victor continues to decline as internal bleeding occurs. Jordan sends him to the OR with Paul & Scott to repair the internal injuries. While in surgery, he is found to have parasites – most likely from eating food not prepared or handled correctly - in addition to his other injuries, but once discovered, Scott & Jordan successfully treat him.

Shannon gives Paul a hard time throughout the shift when she finds him having a light workload for the night.

Jordan confronts Scott about his relationship with Annie saying that she is concerned Annie will break Scott's heart to which Scott implies already happened when he & Jordan broke up.

With new relationships beginning, old ones fizzling & flings sizzling, it's going to be interesting to watch how it all plays out as the season continues! Stay tuned!
