Episode 5 - Get Busy Livin'

Season 3 of The Night Shift continued with episode 5 as Shannon and several first responders arrive at a college party gone wrong. They were called for a student who had passed out after over dosing. While evaluating his condition, a woman falls from a balcony. Shannon tells the EMT to call for back-up and TC arrives to assist. The student who OD’d is taken to the hospital after not responding to emergency treatment on site. The woman who fell, Alina, has a compound fracture of her leg among other injuries and is taken by ambulance to the hospital for further treatment. Once she arrives, Alina reveals that she did not fall, but jumped in an attempted suicide. This news comes as a shock to her roommate/best friend who rode to the hospital with her.

Jessica , a new pharmaceutical rep in town, shows up trying to get the hospital’s business and stirs things up in the process. She weasels her way into the good graces of several doctors promising all-expense paid vacations & treatment funding in order to get the hospital as a client. Scott wants her company to donate an experimental instrument for heart valve surgery to which Jessica agrees on the condition that the hospital signs an exclusive contract for their products.

Meanwhile, Alina’s roommate says that Alina had never done anything like that before and did not seem depressed. TC finds acne medication in Alina’s purse which lists suicidal thoughts or actions as a side effect. TC is angered and confronts Jessica about the safety of her company's medications. After Alina has surgery to repair her injuries suffered in the jump, she begins having complications in recovery. She reveals she had not taken the acne medication yet and has had a hard time with life over the past year and intended to jump, changing her mind as soon as she stepped off. TC consoles her sharing how his brother's death and war time affected him.

When the OD patient dies after failed attempts to revive him, Topher is concerned at the nonchalance shown by Shannon who barely acknowledges that someone just lost their life. Annie shows up at the hospital to bring dinner for TC saying that she is trying to stay busy. When Annie learns of the OD patient’s death, she volunteers to contact his parents. Shannon confronts Annie wondering why she cares so much for someone she never even knew. Topher talks to Shannon and tells her that he understands her feelings & background, but she still needs to have some respect for the patients & their loved ones.

Annie talks to Scott telling him that she has stayed around the hospital because she doesn't want to be alone because she is afraid she will relapse. Scott shares about the relapse he experienced encouraging Annie to continue the addictions recovery program.

On their way to pick up equipment for Kenny's gym, Drew & Kenny stop to pick up Syd's daughter Riley from her martial arts tournament. In between matches, Drew tries to show Riley an escape move and injures her elbow in the process. This does not go over well with Syd who scolds Drew over the phone. Riley is fine, however, and tells her mom it wasn’t Drew’s fault.

Jordan treats a cancer patient, Hannah, who has developed a fever & complications after surgery. Hannah shares that she has made peace with the direction her illness is going and has a DNR. Jordan is adamant that she try some of the new treatments out there. Jordan talks with Jessica trying to get her company to fund a treatment for Hannah. When Jordan says that Hannah has been approved for the treatment, Hannah refuses and Jordan refuses to give up. As their conversation continues, Hannah shares that she was a therapist before she became ill. Their roles of doctor & patient reverse and Jordan becomes the one who is helped the most as a result. Suddenly, Hannah is unable to breathe. Jordan still tries to save her until Hannah asks her to let her go. TC comforts Jordan when he finds her still sitting at Hannah’s bedside after she has passed away.

Once again, the cast did a phenomenal job of bringing the character’s emotions to life throughout this dramatic, heartfelt story.
